The Heart of Giving

Funny how past experiences help shape your life. I grew up in the 50s and 60s in a working-class family in Yonkers, New York. My dad had an amazing heart of giving. Every summer he packed the four of us and as many neighborhood kids who could fit in the old Chevy station wagon. Destination – Playland at Rye, New York! All of us were treated to a day of rides, games and snacks—the works! This was a day of pure joy and magic.
My mom, the oldest of nine siblings, was a genius at stretching a buck. She consistently saved money, later helping all of us get started in life. Both taught us how to be generous through their example.
As Christians, we are taught to give of our time, treasure and talents. We are responsible to use our gifts to glorify God and benefit others. Winston Churchill said "We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give." One of the greatest joys my wife and I experience in life is to give of our treasure to family and charitable organizations, etc.
If you have extra time on your hands, consider volunteering for a worthy cause which you believe in. Maybe you sing or play a musical instrument… your audience awaits you at a senior living center or hospital! I promise you will receive more than you give.
Most of us find that giving is so much more enjoyable than getting! If you are sad and lonely, try giving of yourself especially to someone less fortunate than you. You will not only help someone in need—you will feel so much better, guaranteed!
